Personalized Learning
Experience
Learning through direct experience
Our carefully designed Borneo expedition provides a true
experiential learning opportunity. As experts in differentiated
instruction, Brent and Sheryl have the knowledge and experience to
personalize this learning for each student. The heart of this
learning experience comes from each student’s research question.
Ethical Expeditions will work directly with each school to develop
a meaningful and personalized curriculum for each student.
Research Question
As part of their application, each student will submit a research
question he/she will investigate during the expedition. This
question may be refined as the expedition progresses. This question
will serve to focus and guide students as they visit the expedition
sites and talk to experts and community leaders.
Documentary Video
Students will use digital video as a way to share their personal
story with others around the world. This documentary video may or
may not be directly connected to their research question. Each
produced video will be shared on the Ethical Expeditions website.
Each individual story is part of the larger story of conservation
in Borneo; the people, the places and the issues. This larger story
may be used as the basis for a full-length documentary film.
Connection with Experts
By connecting directly with local and international NGO's, students
will have access to experts in the field of conservation. They will
be working alongside of and learning from incredible individuals
who have dedicated their lives to saving biological diversity of
Borneo.
Student Networking
The students of Ethical Expeditions are international conservation
ambassadors. Students will work closely with local communities,
conservation organizations and students from Borneo to share ideas
and discuss ways to conserve wildlife for generations to come. This
knowledge will be shared with the student’s home community as well
as members of the Ethical Expeditions worldwide community through
blogs, discussion boards and documentary videos.
Instruction
Each day, students will participate in discussions, reflections,
readings, lectures, and/or research. Ethical Expeditions will use
projectors to watch videos in the field, digital book readers for
access to print materials and education centers for periodic
updating of blogs and discussion boards. This classroom component
will serve as the glue that binds together the individual pieces of
knowledge gained during the expedition.
