Ethical: A guiding philosophy; a consciousness of moral
importance
Expedition: A journey undertaken by a group of people
with a definite objective
Green Generation: The green generation lives in the world
with, not against nature. This generation understands and lives
within the natural laws that govern all living creatures. This
generation understands the strength of both natural and cultural
diversity to the health and well being of our planet. Individuals
of this generation understand the power and limitations of
technology to solve our problems. This generation spends more time
outside, consumes less stuff, understands inter-connections and
what it means to live together well.
Green Curriculum: A green curriculum is one that infuses
an environmental ethic into all aspects of a school’s program. Each
course seeks to find deep connections with environmental and social
issues and equips students with the knowledge necessary lead
environmentally ethical lives. Some characteristics of a school
that has a green curriculum include: serving healthy and natural
food, requiring an environmental/global ethics course for all
students, working toward becoming carbon neutral, providing
opportunities for students to become involved in meaningful
environmental/social projects and exposing students to nature and
natural settings as much as possible.
Social Entrepreneur: Individuals with innovative
solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are
ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering
new ideas for wide-scale change. Rather than leaving societal needs
to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find
what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system,
spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to take new
leaps. Social entrepreneurs often seem to be possessed by their
ideas, committing their lives to changing the direction of their
field. They are both visionaries and ultimate realists, concerned
with the practical implementation of their vision above all else.
Each social entrepreneur presents ideas that are user-friendly,
understandable, ethical, and engage widespread support in order to
maximize the number of local people that will stand up, seize their
idea, and implement with it. In other words, every leading social
entrepreneur is a mass recruiter of local changemakers—a role model
proving that citizens who channel their passion into action can do
almost anything. (www.ashoka.org)
Fellow: A member of a group having common
characteristics. An equal in rank, power, or character.
Fellowship: A form of academic financial aid. The state
of being a fellow.
Environmental Ethic: Individuals who possess an
environmental ethic are not only aware of global environmental and
social issues but are actively taking either small or large steps
to make the world a better place. This may include reducing one’s
carbon footprint, starting an environmental/social action project
in one’s own community or actively working to share their knowledge
with others.
